An impressive chunk of limestone soaring from the Tyrrhenian Sea, Capri has been attracting attention for centuries. In the middle of the 19th century, the island and the coast of Amalfi became a magnet for famous artists, intellectuals, aesthetes and especially writers, drawn by the inspirational scenery, gentle climate and dreamy, liberal lifestyle. In the 1950s and 1960s, the location attracted the wealthy and famous and became a screen set of legendary movies.
At the beginning of the holiday season, we slip into the iconic image of Jackie Kennedy, looking for those small, unpretentious places on the island and the coast of Amalfi where we can hide away from the vanity of luxury hotels and Michelin-star restaurants. We trust the experienced professionals from Condé Nast Traveler and make a list of the iconic small restaurants where the locals love to eat.
We start with “Da Emilia”, in Sorrento, a favorite spot for Sophia Loren, who often stayed for lunch while shooting a movie in the city. The restaurant has been opened more than 50 years ago. Unpretentious place with rustic charm and views of the fishing pier where you can enjoy wonderful fresh fish.
We continue with “Da Adolfo” in Positano. The restaurant can be reached by boat, which can be taken from the port every day between 10 and 13 o’clock. You will recognize it by the large red fish on it. It will take you to the small beach where freshly caught fish and delicious local dishes are prepared.
“Maria Grazia” is another secret culinary discovery in the small village of Nerano, which is located near Sorrento. The restaurant was opened in 1901 and is famous for its tasty antipasti and its specialty – the Courgette pasta.
“Trattoria Da Cumpa ‘Cosimo” is a favorite place for locals with almost legendary status, thanks to Jackie Kennedy, who often went there during her stay at the Amalfi coast. A classic family restaurant located at the main square in Ravello.
The is no menu at “La Tagliata”, in Montepertuso, Positano. Just trust your wonderful hosts who will bring you what they have prepared for the day and everything will turn out to be fantastic.
“Il Ritrovo” is a cozy and pleasant place in the village of Montepertuso, Positano, perched on a small hill with a wonderful view of the sea and the bay. There you will find divine antipasti and delicious local specialties. We recommend “Aqua Pazza” – sea bass, prepared according to a special recipe by the chef of “Il Ritrovo”.
The “big” small restaurants we recommend at Capri are: Da Paolino, At Mammà, L’Altro Vissani, La Capannina and E’ Divino.
Capri and the Amalfi coast can be reached by direct flight from Sofia to Naples and a ferry. May is a great month if you want to enjoy the magnificent colors of the wild flowers and vegetation of Capri and the Riviera. The sea is still cool, but the air is fresh and calm. In September the evenings are balmy, the water is still warm and there is a sense that things are calming down to a seductively easy pace. The beauty of nature, the amazing food, and the ability of locals to stop time with “fare niente” make this place a favorite destination for millions of visitors, regardless of the season.
